The Student Environment Leadership Program (SELP) is an empowering experience that inspires students to lead sustainable change at their school. Across four screen-free, hands-on sessions, students are guided to understand sustainability, set achievable goals, and design eco-friendly projects. This engaging and challenging program equips them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become environmental leaders in their communities.
There are two focus areas to choose from in our primary SELP program:
- Transforming Systems – This focus area allows students to deep dive into a particular sustainability area of either waste or biodiversity
- Leadership for Sustainability – this focus area allows students to explore and refine their leadership skills and capabilities
The incursion is divided into four one-hour sessions, completed in a single school day. A CERES educator will guide students through the following steps, depending on the chosen focus area:
Transforming Systems (Waste or Biodiversity)
- Leading Change & Building Knowledge – Understanding how change is made and key environmental concepts that influence project development
- Research and Auditing – Investigating current school sustainability actions and their effectiveness in the school environment
- Analysis and Planning – Evaluating research data gathered from the audit to inform a plan to create change
- Engagement and Reflection – Create products that engage the local community in their school project and reflect on the process
Leadership for Sustainability
- Leadership & Leading Change – Understanding how change is made and the key skills needed for quality leadership
- Goal Setting & Analysis – Creating a clear and achievable project goal based on gathered data and a shared vision
- Planning & Documentation – Developing a project plan with realistic tasks and creating a visual map for the project
- Communication & Reflection – Communicating ideas to the wider school community
The SELP hones in on achievable and impactful school-based environmental projects as a platform to empower students as young leaders in their school and community. The students will:
- Recognise and define the qualities of a leader and how they create change
- Understand important environmental information to inform project planning
- Construct a vision and goal for a project informed by group collaboration
- Analyse their goals to identify opportunities and barriers
- Collect information from a range of sources
- Assemble a timeline of tasks to inform a project plan
- Evaluate the project planning process to inform future decision making
By focusing on an environmental project, students practice leadership skills and develop capabilities identified in the curriculum:
- Visioning: Setting goals, managing time effectively, and collaborating for a common aim
- Problem Solving: Developing the ability to think critically and make informed decisions
- Communicating: Learning and practising to share ideas clearly and to actively listen
- Influencing: Inspire others to work together towards shared goals
- Creativity: Using imagination and creativity to innovate
- Adaptability: Adapting to change, practising teamwork and resilience skills
- Information Literacy: Finding, evaluating, and using information
