Saving water at Killara Primary School

Saving Water at Killara Primary School

Congratulations to Killara Primary School in Sunbury, second prize winners of our Water Challenge scoring a CERES Water Cycles & Solutions student program. Killara Primary School is a ResourceSmart School, and here they share with us how participating in the Water Challenge has raised awareness in their school, and their next water saving goals.

1. How did participating in the water campaign positively impact your school?

Participating in the water campaign positively impacted on our school in a number of ways. The water audit showed that our maintenance regime and monitoring is working, as there were no dripping taps. Our HEROs (Heating, Electricity, Recycling, Officers) were very proud of this result. Our assembly presentation for World Water Day was well received by students, teachers, and parents. The speeches by our school captains and the colourful costuming of the water related characters was a wonderful visual aid for making everyone aware of the importance of saving water.

2. How much of your water reduction success is due to student involvement?

A great deal of our water reduction success is due to students being aware that a dripping tap needs to be reported as soon as possible.

3. What is your next water reduction goal?

We would like to replace the inefficient bubbler taps with water bottle filling stations.

4. What is your advice for other schools struggling with high water use?

We would recommend that all schools participate in the SWEP program to monitor water usage. Encourage all students to use refillable water bottles at school. Water can be reduced further by planting native shrubs and trees and mulching all school gardens, as we have.

Thank you Killara Primary School for sharing your water story!
