Our “Become a Sustainability Change Maker” course will transform your passion for the environment into real change. Running 8 days over 8 weeks, this immersive program will equip you with the tools and strategies to inspire behavior change within your community by implementing practical sustainability action.
Accessing 7 expert presenters and hands-on activities, you’ll gain valuable knowledge on environmental issues and learn how to effectively plan, communicate and drive change. By the end of the course, you’ll feel empowered to start or fastrack your changemaker journey.

Course length: This course will run on Fridays for 8 weeks from Monday 28th April – Monday 23rd June (no class 9th June)

Course Overview

This eight-week course explores different approaches to environmental education through different topic areas such as:

  • Connecting, sharing knowledge and building skills
  • Traditional wisdom and perspectives
  • Sustainable food systems on both small and large scales
  • Linear and circular systems
  • Understanding the role of Australia’s energy systems and personal energy use
  • The role of biodiversity and healthy ecosystems in sustaining life
  • The role of communication in inspiring change
  • Practical ways to share and apply knowledge in your community

 

 

Course Content

Course length:

Session 1 – Changes, Values and Traditional Wisdom

  • Intro to Sustainability
  • Behaviour change – The Basics
  • Your journey
  • Indigenous Knowledge and Traditional Wisdom

Session 2 – Community Impact & Engagement

  • Community building and interpersonal skills
  • Community building tools and techniques
  • Community engagement project development

Session 3 – Circular Waste Systems

  • Linear and circular systems
  • Food waste, composting and worm farms
  • Recycling and management techniques
  • Behaviour Change – steps 4 & 5

Session 4 – Energy Systems

  • Energy efficiency, reduction and peak/off peak periods
  • Energy efficient home design
  • Changemaker project part 1

Session 5 – Biodiversity and Healthy Ecosystems

  • Biodiversity and ecosystem services
  • Local flora, fauna and ecological management
  • Changemaker project part 2

Session 6 – Sustainable Food Systems

  • Sustainable and local food systems
  • Organic urban farms
  • Backyard food growing
  • Behaviour Change – steps 2 & 3 

Session 7 – Communication for Change

  • Communication and audience reach

** A certificate of participation will be issued upon completion of at least 75% of the course

Meet your trainers

Adrian Black is an educator, urban food grower, environmental activist and permaculturalist with just under 10 years experience in environmental education and nature based connection. With a background in design and storytelling, Adrian has a continued commitment to education as an avenue to empower people of any age and background to find meaning within themselves and their communities.

 

As Director of CERES School of Nature and Climate, Jonathan Noble is committed to nurturing a community where, through discovery and learning, every person recognizes their integral place in the natural world. He has worked across sectors for 28 years as a teacher, curriculum manager, director and program designer to develop initiatives based on design principles where we learn from nature, act with hope, lead change, and create greater impact together as part of nature.

ACFE Subsidised Places

This is an ACFE Approved Pre-accredited Course where the cost is subsidised for eligible participants. Participants are deemed eligible through an interview process with our career pathways officer.
