Bird Language

Bird Language

This is a workshop for complete bird-novices who are curious to experience an authentically deep and joyful connection to nature, whether it be wild nature or an urban backyard.

In this immersive workshop you will learn how listening to bird language awakens our ancient survival instincts and fosters a journey of lifelong naturalist inquiry. You will learn how all songbirds on Earth originally evolved from Australia and why. You will also learn to identify songbird alarm calls for ground and aerial predators and understand how we can use these to track predators moving through the landscape. We will explore how songbirds use a variety of different voices to communicate and explore ways to make sense of what each call means.

The last part of the workshop will involve a group activity designed to decolonise our yearly calendar by creating nature-based seasonal descriptions.  While some of the workshop is based indoors you will be required to spend part of the day sitting quietly on your own observing birds, creating a nature journal and sharing your stories with the group.
The course taps into evidence-based research findings from across multiple disciplines that demonstrate how important nature connectedness is for maintaining optimum human health and wellbeing. Learning bird language can reduce stress, improve brain functioning, aid in wound healing, extend attention span, relieve tension, mitigate eco-grief, elevate your sense of vitality and purpose, as well as bring you deep, genuine joy through deepening your connection to the land we live on.
