“What influences the Melbourne community’s ability to garden for self-sufficiency in a sustainable manner?” is the title of a research project by Daniel Moss on sustainable, self-sufficiency gardening in Melbourne. The full report of the project is posted in his own blog at growingourown.wordpress.com/narrative-of-research/.
One interesting findings from Daniel’s project is that growing environmental awareness, especially of the climate change and perceived health benefits have encouraged more people to make the connection to growing their own food as a method of sustainable gardening rather than self-sufficiency. However, drought is the most significant deterring factor for people’s gardening efforts.
In Daniel’s blog you can also find some useful information about permaculture local groups and ecocentres in Melbourne.
