Program: Council services to schools

This program supports sustainability practices in schools and contributes to council’s environment and sustainability goals.

Connects to the following modules of ResourceSmart Schools: Energy, Waste

Accessible to schools in the following Melbourne metropolitan regions: Eastern

Appropriate for students in:
Primary – Prep to Grade 2
Primary – Grade 3 to Grade 6
Secondary – Year 7 to Year 10

What is offered to schools:

1. Waste:

  • Excursions to VISY recycling education centre, Dandenong (includes bus) – 8 schools per financial year
  • Can visit schools to assess waste/bins
  • Can donate compost bins etc
  • Free 1-2 recycling bins
  • Clean Up Aust Day – takes registration for sites, pick up litter from schools day
  • Can provide with bin stickers, mini bins, recycling posters, sticker books (what goes in what bins)
  • Can get extra bins for events (fee involved – contact waste services unit)

2. Biodiversity:

  • Sometimes can provide advice re weeds
  • No set program for providing plants
  • Can put in contact Friends groups
  • Biodiversity posters
  • Factsheet

3. Energy:

  • Powermate available for loan through libraries
  • Considering getting lux and thermometer gun in the future

4. Other:

  • Can talk to student leadership team
  • Two schools per year chosen to go to Carlton FC/Visy day
  • TENs – 4 meetings per year, alternate with Booroondara
  • Advice on starting up a sustainability program
  • Schools can host sustainable living workshops (plan to happen in 2014 as well)
  • Community grants funding (set funding rounds)
