During the season of celebration we need to show extra care for the environment. With a little effort and imagination, we can reduce the impact of the holiday season.

Here are some ideas from CERES Community Environment Park to help celebrate the season while caring for the Earth:

Buy Less

You can give more while spending less, as not all gifts have to be store-bought. And you can simplify the family gift-giving ritual by becoming a ‘Secret Santa’ or having a ‘Kris Kringle’.

Buy Smart

Look for locally made gifts, choose gifts made from recycled sources and try to give ‘battery-free’ gifts.

Connect with Nature

Christmas is a great opportunity to start a family tradition of instilling the values of sustainable living. Why not decorate a tree for the birds with seed bells and pine cones?

Choose a Live Tree

Plastic trees are made of petroleum products (PVC), and use up resources and they live on forever in landfill. Live trees clean the air, smell like Christmas and you can keep one in a pot, ready for next year.

Homemade Cards

Homemade cards are a fun activity for the family that will help the earth by reducing waste. Last year’s calendar or children’s artwork will add colour and add a touch of your own personality to your cards.

Alternatives to Wrapping Paper

Look for paper using recycled content, avoid buying glossy foil or metallic wrapping paper (difficult to recycle), reuse gift wrap where possible and use tape sparingly or not at all. Get creative.

Reuse/Recycle

Reuse or recycle gift packing materials, save any special gift wrap, ribbons and bows, recycle old electronics and you can even recycle your Christmas tree by chipping it and adding to your compost or garden.
