Harvest Home Primary School Waste Learning Story

Students at HHPS have become experts at waste! The student leaders have been spreading an important message about waste and ensuring students use the correct bins allocated in each community. The Waste Warriors check the bins every Friday and award the Trash Trophy to the community that has the least amount of waste and the community that sorts their waste according to the particular bins.

In Year 5 and 6, communities have been a part of the TerraCycle team, they have collected and sorted products that cannot be recycled in the general household recycling bins. HHPS sent in dental products such as toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes in Term 2. In Term 3, students collected dish and air care products which were sent to the TerraCycle program.

In term four, as part of our Sustainability Week focus, we asked our school community to donate their unwanted clothes to the Mondo program. We were lucky enough to even have a visit from Mondo at our school assembly. Unwanted clothing and donations were collected on the 20th November 2019.

Our implementation of Nude Food Days throughout the year has developed. Students at HHPS have been encouraged to bring wrapper free lunches to school. Throughout the year, we have increased the frequency of Nude Food Days and hope to continue to do this in the future.
