ST MAC OUTDOOR KITCHEN
RB Landscapes worked with the community at St Macartan’s Primary School in Mornington to design and deliver the outdoor kitchen classroom of their dreams.
The school’s dream was specific: to establish an Outdoor Kitchen to be used as the teaching and cooking space for garden to classroom curriculum and enable further learning around production, waste, water and resource management themes.
To achieve their brief the design had to be functional as a classroom, robust as outdoor structure and financially feasible for the community. Our design team saw great potential to achieve these objectives whilst incorporating other ideas that produced a truly sustainable cooking space demonstrating sustainability in innovative, localised building practices and design approaches.
The resulting design was composed of recycled, reclaimed and saved materials: cupboards made from old floor boards, benches from fallen trees, planter boxes from old plastic tubes, a wood fire oven from old used bricks, lots of recycled railway sleepers and a really old school combustion hot water service heated directly from the oven! All other materials where sourced locally from within Victoria, opening up conversations around sourcing materials and supporting local industries. Incorporating a grey water filtration bed tied this design together by addressing the consumption and treatment of water within the kitchen space.
