Here at Ruyton, we marked Earth Hour with our own Ruyton “lights out” from 2pm to 3pm last Friday. Everyone across the school was encouraged to switch off the lights in their classrooms and staffrooms and, where possible, to not use electricity for one hour.

To raise awareness of Earth Hour, last Thursday the SFS girls organised a free lunchtime “wireless” concert. The concert was designed to showcase the fun you can have without electricity and it was originally scheduled to be an outdoor event. Sadly, the inclement weather on the day meant the concert had to be moved inside. That didn’t dampen our spirits, however, and we turned out the lights andenjoyed the concert in the dark, in true Earth Hour style!
The audience was treated to a wonderful feast of music from musicians with no microphones, no amps and no electric instruments – but heaps of talent. The Peelers and Madrigals gave us a taste of their new repertoire, a soloist kept us spellbound with her solo performance on the guitar, and the Yr 11 Band, rocked the audience during their performance of some recent hits.
We also created an Earth Hour banner and made stickers and posters to promote the concert and to encourage students to participate in Earth Hour at home.
