Being Water Wise

Fresh water is a precious resource. By saving water at school and at home we can reduce our water bills and improve the health of our rivers and creeks.

Here at SPS we are wising up to our water use by enlisting the help of the School Water Efficiency Program, otherwise known as SWEP. Since 2014, SWEP have been helping to monitor our water usage and provide us with easy to interpret data. This has encouraged us to become mindful of our water consumption, identify leaks and call in the plumber to help when the need arises!!

The best ways we can save water at school are by making sure all taps are turned off and by reporting any dripping taps or constantly running toilets to the office.

Saving water at home

Check out these great water saving ideas from the City of Casey website!

* Check your efficiency rating prior to installing household appliances that use water such as washing machines, dishwasher, toilet, taps and showers

* Take shorter showers

* Install water efficient showerheads

* Only use your washing machine and dishwasher when they are full

* Don’t leave the water running while brushing your teeth

* Wash dirty dishes by hand

* Identify leaks in your home and fix dripping taps. Check for leaking pipes by reading your water meter before you go to bed, then again in the morning. If there has been no water use overnight and the reading has changed, you have a leaking pipe.

* Install dual flush toilets and use the half flush option

* Put a plug in the sink instead of washing razors, dishes or vegetables in running water

* Wash your car using a bucket and on the lawn so you water your grass at the same time

* Water your garden in the cool of the morning or late evening with a trigger nozzle

* Know your plants water needs and check the weather forecast before watering your garden

* Water your garden less often but more thoroughly

* Use a rake or broom to clean paths and driveways rather than a hose

* Seek alternative options such as using grey water or rainwater for watering your garden

* Visit Selandra Community Place to obtain information and ideas on water saving initiatives

* Seek information on water rebate programs for Victorians
