At Moomba Park Primary School we have a VOCAL (Voice of Children as Leaders) Group consisting of students in grade 5/6 that show leadership skills and form a Student Representative Council. As part of their role, they have initiated Clean Up Arvo’s, and helped teachers to run Garden Club to establish our veggie gardens. In Term 3, as part of our schools commitment to Sustainability, they will be involved in the formation of a new front of school garden which includes sustainable and indigenous plants, trees, sensory paths and community gardens. This will become a bigger part of their responsibility throughout the year.

Grade 3/4 students have become Environmental Warriors as part of an Enviro Club. They have planted and maintained our back veggie patch and are looking forward to cooking what they have grown, in class. They will also look at our schools Biodiversity as part of their Science unit next term. This may include collecting data to include nesting boxes and bird attracting plants to our school landscape.

We have also promoted our commitment to the landscaping works to our school community via our newsletter on 21 may 2016:

Some extremely exciting news on behalf of the Moomba Park School Council – at the meeting held, the final motion was carried to landscape the front of the school. Over the course of the year, a working party has worked through the process of choosing a landscape company and then collaborated with this company to develop a design.

In working through this process, three design elements became the cornerstone of the overall project. They are being able to use the space for:

  • An environmental education purpose
  • Community use through the development of a community garden
  • Family space that can be used for relaxation and play

These elements are important as it was recognised by School Council that a resource of this type does not exist within our local context. If you would like to view the concept plan and plant list, it will be on display outside of Room 10. This is an extremely exciting project and we’re looking forward to the end result.
