During March the NHS Student Green Team embarked on a campaign to collect unwanted mobile phones for recycling – the Mobile Muster. The team expanded this collection to include household batteries, CD/DVD, computer disks and small electronic items.

We made students aware that recycling these items would help the gorillas in their natural habitat, which is being destroyed for the mining of Coltan found in many mobile phones. Recycling these phones means we can use the old Coltan from the phones and put it in new ones allowing less of their environment to burn down and more gorillas to survive.

The collection took place over three weeks with Green Team members visiting classes and also having a collection box at the IT help desk in the Library.

We collected:

• 43 Phones

• 72 CD/DVDs & computer disks

• 115 batteries

• 15 other electrical items

These will now be taken for recycling. We will now also make available a permanent collection point for these items at the IT help desk.

These items can also be recycled through your local Council. For Darebin visit one of the Customer Service Centres, Yarra drop them at Council depot Roseneath Street, Clifton Hill and for Moreland and any Citizen Service centre.
