In 2012, Doncaster Gardens Primary started their journey to become a 5 Star Sustainable School. We joined the ResourceSmart AuSSI Vic initiative and with the help of CERES and Manningham City Council, we started making changes within the school community.
One of the first actions we took was to establish a Student Action Team, known as The Green Team. This team is the heart of sustainability within our school. They come up with ideas and initiatives to implement in the school and they follow through with their decisions. They empower other students and make an environmental difference. Their major action in 2012 has been implementing Nude Food Day on a weekly basis.
We are working towards a better future. Listed below are some actions we have implemented to our school.
- Installed Water Tanks that are linked to our toilets as well as the garden and oval
- Installed Solar Panels
- Installed light Monitors in our new building
- Recycle paper and plastics
- Use of a compost bin and multiple worm forms
- Regular Nude Food Days
- Use of Sugar Mulch on our gardens
- Adjusted the flow of taps to reduce water
- Installed Tiger Turf in some areas of the school
- Use of drought tolerant grass and plants
- Permanent half flush on student toilets
- Sensors and timers for urinals
