CERES Education is out on the road with an innovative new leadership program. Engaging and empowering students to be change-makers in their communities, the Do More With L.E.S.S. (Leaders in Environmentally Sustainable Schools) Conference is travelling to communities across Victoria.

With a focus on the theme of energy, students from schools across the state are coming together to collaborate and engage with hands-on activities from our Mobile Energy Classroom. Students investigate how we could do more with less and road test a series of interactive work stations that explore renewable energy technologies, sustainable building, energy efficiency and greenhouse gases.

The conferences are an invaluable platform for collaboration across school communities. A highlight of the conference are the student presentations where each school shares information on their environmental projects and dreams. This knowledge sharing is supported throughout the day as students work across school groups, bolstering student leadership and bringing forth new environmental projects and action plans. One staff member at our Bairnsdale conference reported that “students really loved learning that what they’re doing at school is part of a bigger picture and it was great for them to see what other schools are doing and how it all ties together”.

The conferences are a great success and a rich learning opportunity for all. To date 400 environmental leaders from 45 rural and regional schools have participated; engaging in hands-on learning activities, collaborating with each other and honing skills in environmental leadership and action planning.

CERES Education developed and delivered six free regional conferences in 2015 thanks to the support of our community partners – RACV. We would like to acknowledge ResourceSmart Schools who helped us coordinate conferences across their school networks.
