Permablitz at Box Hill North Primary School
On March 24th 2012 Box Hill North Primary School was very lucky to be “Blitzed”! We had entered a competition to win a garden makeover sponsored by the Whitehorse Council and VEG (Very Edible Garden). The winning entry would have representatives from the Council and from VEG, as well as a team of up to 30 volunteers, plan and complete a garden area.
As the winners of the competition we gained valuable time with Adam from VEG. He helped us plan a fabulous garden area which the students would be able to work in, plant out, pick from and which would also provide a wonderful learning environment.
There were lots of meetings, emails and ringing around to make sure all was in order as it was a very tight timeline, but on the day it all went extremely well.
The volunteers were very keen to help the school put in the garden beds, weed, rake and clean up the area. As well as that, we all received mini sessions run by Adam and Dan from VEG to help us learn about different plants, putting in irrigation and how to build the beds.
It was tremendous to see a complete garden transformation at the end of the day; an area that hadn’t looked like much before the blitz was completely transformed and all the hard work all the volunteers had put in made such a difference.
A huge thank you to VEG and to Whitehorse Council for the prize and fabulous garden beds and to our wonderful Sustainability Committee who met many times to plan and discuss the proposed area and who also worked on the day.
