Join our expert educators and explore the concepts of organic urban gardening. Discover where food comes from and how organic food systems connect to a healthy self, community and planet, and investigate the wondrous relationship between bees, bugs and soil.

Year Level
Years 3-10

$215 for a 1-hour session
+ booking fee
(maximum group size is 25 students)

via Zoom or preferred platform (Google Meets, Webex etc.)

Our educators will guide students through problem solving and action planning to create change within their school community and explore solutions to increase local food production at school or home.

Key questions for students to consider:

Yr F-2: Where do farmers fit into our fruit and vegetable plants life cycle? What are animal products and how can they change? What can we and farmers do to care for the plants and animals in our diet?

Yr 3-10: How has using chemicals impacted our farms and environment? How does caring for our soil help to tackle climate change? What are some current solutions to transform our food system?

Through this interactive virtual excursion your students will:

Years F – 2

  • Discover what plants need to grow into healthy fruit and vegetables
  • Explore the different fruit and vegetables in our diets and what part of the plants they come from
  • Explore the various animals we farm in Australia and the food and fibre we receive from them
  • Understand how we can care for plants and animals in our diet, even without being a farmer!

Years 3 – 10

  • Find out how industrial farming negatively impacts our landscape and wildlife
  • Discover the role of biodiversity on a farm
  • Explore organic and regenerative farming practices
  • Understand how our daily diets can have positive impacts on our environment
  • Explore the importance of soil and the role it can play in tackling climate change

You’ll receive a school teacher guide, including instructions for optional activities to do before and after your virtual excursion and a Kahoot! Quiz.

Years F – 2

  • Students can identify phases in the plant life cycle
  • Students can identify different parts of plants and locate which part we consume
  • Students can list farm animals and the animal products we receive from them
  • Students can explain how animal products can be processed into different foods
  • Students can identify the value of our farm animals beyond simply food and fibre
  • Students can explain how we and farmers can care for the plants and animals in our diet.

Years 3 – 10

  • Students understand and can identify various organic and regenerative farming practices
  • Students can identify elements of industrial agriculture is and explain their impacts on surrounding landscape and wildlife
  • Students can identify alternative locations in which we can produce food
  • Students can identify ecological indicators of how farming practices are linked to climate change
  • Students can discuss solutions on how to feed a growing population whilst still caring for our environment

This program links to curriculum areas of:
Science, Geography, English, Civics & Citizenship

Monday – Friday during the term

How the virtual excursion will run:
  • We can use Zoom Video Conferencing to deliver the virtual learning sessions. If your school has a preferred platform (WebEx, Google Meets, MS Teams etc.) just let us know in your booking form
  • The session will open 5 minutes before the scheduled start
  • The session is live and interactive with a CERES Educator – we encourage students to have their video on and unmute when apporpriate
  • Q & A will be left open for students to communicate with CERES educators during the virtual excursion
What you’ll receive:
  • You will be sent a unique URL if we are using Zoom for your session
  • A school teacher guide, including instructions for optional activities to do before and after your virtual excursion
What you need for the session:
  • Tablet or mobile device – download the free Zoom app
  • PC, laptop or smartboard – allow the Zoom extension file download request
  • For in-school we recommend one smartboard and a minimum of 1 device per 3 students
